Introduction to the Story
" Thank you , Ma'am ' is a heart - touching tale of love , kindness and trust . It is a classic short story with very rich themes . It tells us the story of a boy who tries to steal a woman's purse . It also tells us the story of a woman who tries to make the world a better place from her small corner . The woman catches the boy , stops him and drags him . She surprises him by what she does next . She takes him to her home instead of the police station , cleans him up and gives him food . She treats him with a kindness he has never known and teaches him right from wrong . Sentences in the story mainly have a simple structure . Language is also mostly plain and easy . Hughes writes the story in the idiom of black American . Most of the story is written in an urban dialect . The narrator speaks in a colloquial voice and the characters speak colloquial dialogues .

Summary of the Story
Thank You Ma'am ' is about a young boy who attempts to snatch ( স্ন্যাচ ) a purse ( পাস ) from an aged , bulky lady . He fails in his attempt because he cannot maintain his balance while snatching ( স্ন্যাচিং ) the purse . The lady catches hold of the boy and almost drags ( ড্রাগস্ ) him to her home . The boy is treated kindly by the lady at her house . She befriends ( বিফ্রেন্ডস্ ) him by providing him food , cleaning him and ultimately giving him ten dollars to buy a pair of blue suede ( স্যুয়েড ) shoes . The boy at first thinks of running away but the kind attitude of the lady makes him change his mind . He sincerely tries to express his gratitude but his expression ( এক্সপ্রেশন ) falls short of his emotion . They part at the end , but it becomes almost certain by this time that the boy is a changed person now who would probably never commit ( কমিট ) such a mistake again .

Then Mrs Jones asked the boy to wash his face and offered a clean towel . The lady said that she herself had to suffer a lot in her youth . Her candid confession gave the boy confidence . He became familiar with the lady and no longer wanted to flee . She shared her present working experiences with the boy while they ate so that he would be quite easy with her . The lady advised the boy not to commit such a misdeed again . Finally , she gave him ten dollars to buy the coveted blue suede shoes . Thus the lady reformed ( রিফর্মড ) Roger by playing the role of a perfect friend and guide ( গাইড ) .
